About Russ Wolf

The first time I saw a Native American flute was in 1993 at a Ute trading post near Mesa Verde National Park while on a family vacation. I couldn't afford that flute, but having been a long time wood worker and wood shop teacher, I was certain I could build one. It wasn't as easy as I thought it might be, particularly since there was very little information at that time, however, that one flute started me down a path that I continue on today.  Not only did I start building flutes, I also became interested in their history. Many vacations since then have included visits to museums to photograph and research old flutes. Additionally, I began to investigate the flute building process, looking for easy and efficient methods that would produce great sounding flutes. Documenting those processes lead me to write a book, Flute Shop: A Guide to Crafting the Native American Style Flute. This book has sold thousands of copies and has been an introduction to the craft for many flute makers. Future plans include building on that document to create a multi-media (video, text, drawings, photographs) course of instruction in flute making. Currently, I've decided to pursue the business of flute making by producing flutes on a more consistent basis and making them available to more people through a variety of venues, including this web site.

I live with my wife and children in Lewisville, TX and earn my living as a professional Firefighter/Paramedic.
